The 12-year-old St. Johns girl who was hit by a car on her way to school Wednesday morning is in stable condition, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office told The Citizen.

The student was riding her bicycle en route to Fruit Cove Middle School and was crossing Racetrack Road at South Branch Drive when she was hit.

The first 911 call came in at 6:57 a.m., and police said the heavily trafficked area was still darkened at the time.

Her bike did not have any lights.

Several witnesses stopped to render aid to the girl as she lay in the street.

She was airlifted to a local hospital and initially listed in critical condition.

SJSO said she was crossing the stretch outside of a designated crosswalk area and that no charges will be filed.

The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and was fully cooperative, the sheriff’s office said.

Locals took to Facebook to highlight the traffic hazards in the area, especially for kids who ride their bikes to school.
