Friends and neighbors in Nocatee are rallying to support Mollie Noe and her three school-aged children, who were left homeless last week after a house fire ripped through the upper reaches of their home.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue crews responded to the blaze on Saturday afternoon, battling intense flames and smoke pouring from the attic and roof.

Officials suspect that the fire originated with an electrical issue, but an investigation is ongoing.

Although firefighters managed to quickly subdue the blaze, the damage was done. The house is now uninhabitable.

“It’s just overwhelming,” Noe told The Citizen, pausing as she fought back tears. “The kids are taking it especially hard. The bedrooms were hit the worst, and everything they’ve known is gone.”

The family has now been split up in the immediate aftermath, staying with relatives and neighbors who have opened up their homes to accommodate them.

A GoFundMe campaign set up to assist the family has already raised more than $35,000 in under a week.

“As they navigate this challenging time, they need support to cover immediate needs such as temporary housing, clothing, food, and other necessities,” the post reads.

Some neighbors have placed tape on their mailboxes to signal to the Noes that their homes are open for small everyday needs that suddenly pose a challenge — like doing laundry.

“We have to be strong,” Noe said. “But we couldn’t do it alone—and we’re not. Right now, we’re just trying to get through the initial shock.”

While the house is now in danger of collapse, Noe said the outpouring of kindness has helped keep her spirit standing despite the daunting challenges ahead.

“We are so grateful for all the support we’ve received,” Noe said. “It’s hard to put into words.”
