A Flagler Estates teenager was severely injured early Friday morning in a hit-and-run, according the St. Johns County Sheriffs Office.

A resident found the 14-year-old lying in the middle of the road on Palatka Blvd near Carpenter Ave. in Flagler Estates at 6:45 a.m. and called 911.

The teen was airlifted to a local hospital, and a police source told The Citizen that he is alive but in “bad shape.”

SJSO learned that the teen was heading to catch a bus at 6:08 a.m. in the rural area and that he was likely lying in the roadway for at least 30 minutes before being discovered on the lightly travelled stretch.

The department’s Real Time Intelligence Center is working to identify a suspect in the case.

SJSO said evidence at the scene indicated that the driver’s car sustained front end damage and possibly broken lights.

“If you live in the area, please review any exterior video you have on your property and send to sointelligence@sjso.org,” the agency said in a release. “If you have information related to this incident, immediately contact SJSO: (904) 824-8304 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS.”
