96-year-old man dead, teen in critical after head on St. Johns County crash

A 96-year-old died in the crash.

A 96-year-old man is dead, and a 17-year-old girl is in serious condition after a head-on crash on State Road 16 Thursday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said around 9:48 a.m., the St. Augustine teen was driving a sedan heading west on SR-16 near Turnbull Creek Road.

At the same time, a pickup truck driven by a 62-year-old St. Augustine woman was heading east.

The crash report states the sedan left the travel lane and crossed over the turn lane into the eastbound lanes, and the vehicles crashed head-on.

FHP said the 96-year-old man, who was a passenger in the pickup truck, died as a result of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck and another passenger, a 32-year-old St. Augustine man, sustained minor injuries.

The teen driving the sedan sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt.
