A 22-year-old woman was hit with four years and 10 months in prison for drunkenly mowing down two pedestrians near the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument last year.
Shannon King pleaded no contest to a slew of felony charges stemming from the crash before Judge R. Lee Smith handed down her fate last week.
According to police, witnesses spotted King speeding south down Avenida Menendez at 1:56 a.m. on Jan. 7 before she careened into the landmark’s parking lot.
King’s vehicle struck friends Riley McGovern and Flagler College soccer player Addie Meyers on a sidewalk before crashing into a parking payment kiosk and a sign.
McGovern — who attended Pedro Menendez High School in St. Augustine — attempted to push Meyers out of the car’s path before impact, according to reports.
Both women were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with McGovern being placed in a medically induced coma at the time. The status of their current condition wasn’t immediately clear.
A passenger in King’s vehicle, Lamar Johnson Jr., 22, was charged with resisting officers without violence for refusing to obey arriving police officers and interfering with their probe.
Body camera video released by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office shows a deputy arriving at the scene as King exits her silver sedan.
A distraught witness told officers what she observed.
“I remember seeing that car over there, probably a drunk f****** driver hit that girl in the pink shirt,” she can be heard saying. “I only saw her body fly, I did not see the second girl get hit.”
A friend of the victims, who was nearby, said “they both went flying into the air.”
King was given a Breathalyzer at the scene and blew twice the legal limit.
“It’s late and my mom is probably scared,” the Orange Park resident states. “I’m scared.”
She can be heard on the footage crying and asking about the condition of the victims.
She admitted to deputies that she had three tequila sunrise cocktails at the No Name Bar in St. Augustine prior to climbing into the driver’s seat, according to a police report.
In addition to her prison term, King will also face a period of probation and was ordered to pay restitution of $48,000 to each victim.
Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call for comment.
