St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office deputies were involved in a shooting with an armed suspect on US1 North near International Golf Parkway after a high speed chase around 4 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital following the incident.

Stephanie Foss, 31, of St. Augustine told The Citizen that she drove by the scene after moments after the man was shot and saw him on the ground.

“He got out of his car and was going to run,” Foss said. “When I got there he was on the ground and there were three or four officers working on him.”

Both northbound and southbound lanes of US1 were closed just south of International Golf Parkway as authorities investigate.

Officials say there is no threat to the public, and additional details will be released.

Foss said the police response escalated rapidly.

Within minutes, dozens of deputies had converged on the area, creating what witnesses described as a massive law enforcement presence.
