The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office sounded a civil note Friday amid heightened tensions over nationwide protests slated for this weekend — including two local gatherings.

While some Sunshine State law enforcement officials have issued hard-edged warnings to would-be troublemakers, the SJSO issued a less confrontational statement Friday afternoon.

“The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is aware of planned protests this weekend,” the agency wrote. “The SJSO supports the first amendment right to protest for all citizens.”

The department said the local groups planning two “No Kings” actions this weekend to object to President Donald Trump have pledged lawful demonstrations of dissent.

“The organizers have voiced their commitment to a peaceful assembly and additional law enforcement resources will be available to ensure the safety of attendees and others traveling in the area of the planned events.”

One action is planned at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Race Track Road in St. Johns County and another is set to take place near the Castillo de San Marcos in downtown St. Augustine.

Protests are planned in cities across the country, including Los Angeles and New York, where recent demonstrations have focused on the administration’s immigration policies.

Those actions have drawn both support and backlash nationwide.

The Saturday demonstrations coincide with several symbolic dates: Flag Day, the U.S. military’s 250th anniversary and Trump’s 79th birthday.
