A stranger’s kindness marked the first moment of comfort in a scene of unthinkable horror.

After gunshots rang out on a dark Jacksonville Beach road in February 2022, 2-year-old Bexley Bridegan sat strapped in the backseat of her father’s SUV, terrified and alone.

Jared Bridegan, a Microsoft manager and father of four, had been shot dead just feet away.

Minutes later, a passerby approached the vehicle, wrapped the toddler in their own child’s blanket and held her until police arrived.

That image — her daughter cradled by a stranger — never left Kirsten Bridegan.

Bexley spent hours in police care before being reunited with her mother, and the lack of basic comforts haunted her.

“There was no dry diaper,” Bridegan said recalled Monday. “There was no sippy cup. There was barely anything to keep her distracted.”

Out of that trauma came an idea that would ripple far beyond her family’s loss.

On Monday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier honored Bridegan at a Ponte Vedra Beach press conference announcing a major expansion of Bexley Boxes, the child-comfort kits Kirsten created in her daughter’s name.

The boxes, distributed to law enforcement agencies, contain diapers, wipes, snacks, cups, toys, and blankets — simple items meant to soothe children caught in crisis.

Bridegan launched the effort in 2022, initially funding the first box herself and delivering it to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.

When she shared Bexley’s story online, parents across the country asked the same question: why weren’t these boxes everywhere?

They soon began to spread. Bexley Boxes are now in use across 17 states, including more than 65 locations in Florida.

Thursday’s announcement marked a turning point. Walmart pledged $100,000 in financial and in-kind support, a partnership that will place 120 additional Bexley Boxes in Florida law enforcement offices over the next month.

Uthmeier, who had vowed last year to help bring the boxes statewide, called the partnership a critical boost.

“People may not realize how often children are in police departments,” Uthmeier said. “It happens more often than you realize.”

St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick, Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma, and Walmart Regional Vice President Abby Belobraydic  joined him at the podium Monday.

For Bridegan, who is widowed with two young children and whose late husband’s former wife now faces capital murder charges in the case, the mission remains deeply personal.
