Inter-party combat has reached new levels in St. Johns County.
Flyers featuring fake endorsements for a slew of GOP political candidates were sent to residents across the county, drawing the ire of the local Republican Party just weeks ahead of election day.
The St. Johns County Republican Party logo appeared at the top of the flyer, along with a list of eight candidates for offices ranging from the Senate to the local school board.
But the organization said the endorsements were false, and that it backed an entirely different slate of candidates.
“To come out the day before voters come out for early voting, with this level of fraud, claiming they are in fact the county party, is just beyond the bounds of reason, acceptability, and potentially not only voter fraud, out of state at federal level but it can also be mail fraud,” St. Johns County GOP chief Denver Cook said in a statement.
Noting a much harder edge to attack ads and electoral mailers, locals have called this year’s Republican primary season the most bruising in the county’s history.
