St. Johns County will hold a community meeting on Feb. 11 to present a finalized plan for the proposed Shore Drive Trail, a waterfront project that has sparked debate among residents over environmental impacts, neighborhood character, and cost.
The open house, scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the St. Augustine South Improvement Association on Royal Road, comes as county officials seek public input on whether to move forward with the long-discussed 3.25-mile multi-use trail along Shore Drive between the Doug Crane and Moultrie boat ramps.
County staff and local supporters say the project is would improve pedestrian and bicycle safety while minimizing impacts to the Shore Drive Waterfront Park.

Plans call for a 5-foot-wide paved trail using asphalt and boardwalks in environmentally sensitive areas, with the goal of preserving the existing landscape.
Opponents counter that the project would permanently alter the natural character of the waterfront area.
Some residents also worry that paving a trail through the park could damage tree roots, disrupt wildlife, and urbanize the area.
Others question whether the trail is necessary, suggesting that less expensive safety improvements could address roadway concerns.
As part of the outreach efforts, the County has launched a community survey asking residents whether they support or oppose the project.
The survey will remain open until March 1, 2026, and results will be shared with the Board of County Commissioners before a final decision is made.
