A Virginia woman vacationing in St. Augustine with her husband remains in a coma after being struck by a car last Thursday, according to a GoFundMe post.
Rita Layman and her husband, Derron Layman, went biking on a trail in Palatka around 4:30 p.m. when the accident occurred.
According to family, as they crossed a road after traffic had stopped, a vehicle failed to yield and struck Rita directly.

She was rushed to Orange Park Medical Center, where she remains in a coma..
“This sudden change in their lives has been very difficult,” a family member wrote in the fundraiser post. “Derron is by her side, praying and waiting for any sign of improvement. We are all holding onto hope for Rita’s recovery.”
The family has set up the campaign to help cover rising medical bills, travel expenses, and rehabilitation costs.
“On behalf of Derron and all our family, we want to thank you most of all for your prayers and thoughts,” the post reads. “If you feel led to give, your generosity will make a real difference in Rita and Derron’s lives as they navigate this long and uncertain road.”
The drive had raised nearly $10,000 by Thursday morning.
Authorities are investigating the accident.
