Hallowes be thy name.
The St. Johns County School Board has decided on a name for a new K-8 school slated to open in Rivertown in August — Hallowes Cove Academy.
The winning candidate beat out a handful of other contenders, including Rivertown Academy, River Cove Academy, and River Oaks Academy.
The board eschewed a riparian theme and unanimously selected Hallowes Cove.
Board member Beverly Slough explained that Hallowes Cove is the name of a nearby stretch of the St. Johns River.
“It’s a very pristine place in the waterway,” she said. “It’s very geographically close to the school and it has a strong cultural historical significance to the community.”
Online reaction to the choice was generally positive, with some observers asserting that the name evoked visions of Harry Potter.
Board member Dr. Linda Thomson lauded the selection as unique.
“There is so many river this or river that,” she said. “I think Hallowes Cove is distinctive.”
The school has yet to decide on a mascot, with the Ravens, Raptors, Riptides, Rays and Gators among the frontrunners.
