David Lee and Brandi Smith were both shot dead early Monday morning.

A close pal and football teammate of the 14-year-old Middleburg boy accused of gunning down his parents says he can’t reconcile the Trevor Lee he knew with the one now charged with the crimes.

Kyree Beamon said Lee called him after midnight early Monday morning — around the time of the slayings.

“He told me that he loved me and he told me that he was just calling to tell me good night,” Beamon told News4Jax.

“They were probably the best, or one of the best families, I knew,” he said of Brandi Smith, 45, and David Lee, 45. “They were funny, and they treated me very well. They told me all the time that they loved me like a son, and they treated me as such.”

Police said Lee called 911 and told them what he had done. He was taken into custody at a nearby church, and police said he used his parents’ weapon to murder them.

Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook said he had a fight with them on Sunday night but didn’t elaborate on the blowup.

Beamon said he and Lee had been close pals since elementary school, and that Lee had just given him a ride to practice on Friday.

“The Trevor that did this, I don’t know that Trevor,” he told the outlet.

Smith and Lee were found dead in their home from multiple gunshots and the firearm was found nearby, police said.

Authorities are continuing to probe the circumstances that led up to the killings.

A resident of Lee’s block told The Citizen that there were no outward signs of turmoil at the home, and that Lee appeared as a normal teenager.
