A suspect who pointed a gun at drivers and pursuing St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies on I-95 Monday morning has been airlifted to a trauma center after flipping his vehicle, officials said.
SJSO began receiving numerous 911 calls at roughly 9:30 a.m. about someone pointing a gun at them and driving recklessly.
Responding deputies tried to stop the suspect, but he kept driving while pointing the firearm at officers.
The suspect eventually crashed his red Ford truck south of SR16 after colliding with a civilian driver.
An SJSO K9 engaged the suspect while deputies extracted him.
He was taken into custody and airlifted to a local trauma center, SJSO said.
“SJSO is conducting an investigation to determine what led up to the incident,” the department said. *Southbound lanes of I95 are back reopen.”
The civilian driver who collided with the suspect was not injured.
The incident shutdown the stretch Monday, snarling traffic.
