A student activist group at Flagler College is pressing administrators on immigration enforcement, unveiling a list of demands aimed at making the private liberal arts school a “sanctuary campus.”

The St. Augustine Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) last week urged the college to bar federal immigration agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), from stepping onto campus property.

The group also asked Flagler to deny entry to the St. Augustine Police Department and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office as long as they remain signed on to ICE’s 287(g) agreement.

The program allows local law enforcement agencies to partner with ICE and perform certain federal immigration enforcement duties.

FLAGLER COLLEGE EARNS PRESTIGIOUS DISTINCTION

Officers receive training and authorization to identify and detain people who may be in the country illegally.

In addition to restricting law enforcement access, SDS is calling on Flagler to provide confidential legal support for any undocumented and international students.

The group also wants the administration to formally declare the college a sanctuary campus, a largely symbolic designation adopted by some schools in recent years to signal objection to federal immigration enforcement policies.

The group posted the demands on a Change.org petition last week.
