The chaotic churn of the transfer portal no longer just applies to college.
Prep stars are shuffling between high school campuses at an increasingly frequent clip, and the trend isn’t sparing the local football scene.
Perennial St. Johns County juggernaut St. Augustine is losing its star quarterback, Brenton James, to a Georgia high school after a breakout 2025 season.

The standout signal caller made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday night.
“I Have Enrolled at McEachern High School,” James said simply.
The mobile marksman is the younger brother of Yellow Jacket legend Brandon James, who starred in the Old City before becoming a Florida Gator legend and National Champion.
The elder James did not comment on the move Wednesday apart from retweeting his sibling’s announcement.
Notably, Brenton James listed his brother’s Twitter handle along with other McEachern coaches in his post, fueling speculation that one of St. Augustine’s favorite sons will be joining him in Georgia.

Reached by The Citizen, St. Augustine Head Football Coach Brian Braddock declined to comment Wednesday.
Brenton James powered St. Augustine High School’s 2025 season with an explosive year under center, throwing for 2,379 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 67 percent of his passes and adding 213 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground.
Located in Cobb County, McEachern High School football is considered a top-tier program in Georgia’s highest classification.
