A stolen vehicle pursuit Thursday afternoon shut down all southbound lanes of I-95 near Elkton after a suspect rammed a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and fled, authorities said.

The crash happened at mile marker 311, near the State Road 207 interchange west of St. Augustine.

Just before 4 p.m., deputies located a stolen vehicle near State Road 16 and I-95, according to the sheriff’s office.

When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the suspect intentionally struck an SJSO vehicle and sped away, triggering a pursuit south on I-95.

The chase ended when the suspect vehicle crashed near the State Road 207 exit. The suspect was taken to a local hospital.

Traffic was diverted to State Road 207 as all southbound lanes remained closed.

Officials said there is no threat to the public, but a large law enforcement presence remained in the area.

The Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating, and delays were expected until further notice.
