St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick addresses reporters on Wednesday, Mar. 4, after a fatal shooting in the SilverLeaf area.

One man was killed and two others were injured after a shooting at a construction site in the SilverLeaf area, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday at a press conference.

Deputies received multiple 911 calls of shots fired and responded to the scene near Crimson Leaf Drive and Johns Island Parkway at 4:26 p.m. to find three male victims, Sheriff Rob Hardwick told reporters.

One victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, the agency said. The victim’s name has not been released.

Two other men were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately known.

“They were all working together and were known to each other through the construction business,” Hardwick said of the men who were helping build a new road in the SilverLeaf area.

An argument erupted between two of the men and became physical, the sheriff said.

“During the physical contact, the suspect pulls out a firearm and multiple shots are fired at our victim,” Hardwick said. “There’s some collateral damage and some other victims are actually hit with some bullets.”

The suspect fled the scene in a car with another man. Deputies located the suspect at 4:53 p.m., traveling westbound on State Road 206, and detained him and his passenger at the Love’s Travel Stop. The men were taken to the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, officials said.

The Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating. The State Attorney’s Office was on scene. Officials said additional information will be released when available.
