Dizzying rates of expansion and development could easily double St. Johns County’s population to by the year 2050, according to the municipality’s eye-popping new Comprehensive Plan.
The report was based in part on a University of Florida demographic study that projected the county to grow to more than 660,000 residents over the next quarter century.
That population explosion will require an equally stratospheric increase in new housing development — and as current residents will willingly attest, local builders are already taking heed.
According to a county tally, there are currently no less than 350 housing developments in progress across the once sleepy expanse.
Already one of the Sunshine State’s wealthiest counties, median income levels — and home prices — have ballooned in recent years with the en masse arrival of residents from California to New Jersey.
