Local football hero DeMario Douglas returned to St. Augustine this week to receive a formal recognition from the city that raised him.
During a commission meeting, City Commissioner Cynthia Garris presented Douglas — known as “Pop” — with a certificate honoring his athletic achievements and ongoing support of his native soil.
Garris praised the wide receiver, who recently had five receptions in the Super Bowl, for his perseverance, grit, and humble nature.

“Born in Jacksonville, Florida and raised in St. Augustine, Florida, [he] is a proud product of this community whose journey amplifies perseverance, excellence and hometown pride,” she said.
The proclamation highlighted Douglas’ path through local schools, including Ketterlinus Elementary, Sebastian Middle School and Pedro Menendez High School, before transferring to Mandarin High School.
Douglas went on to star at Liberty University, recording more than 2,000 career receiving yards. He was selected by the New England Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The city also noted Douglas’ role in the Patriots’ run to the 2026 Super Bowl and that he wears jersey No. 3 in honor of his mother, grandmother and great-grandmother — all St. Augustine residents.
“Despite his success, [he] remains deeply committed to his roots,” Garris said, citing his youth football camps, toy drives and other local outreach.
Surrounded by family, the smiling star kept his remarks brief.

“It takes a village,” he said. “Shout out to my village that got me through everything.”
“I feel like God put me on this earth to serve,” Douglas added, encouraging parents to “pour into your kids … that’s the future.”
