A 44-year-old St. Johns County man is facing multiple charges, including felony DUI, after a violent golf cart crash on June 6 left a passenger hospitalized with severe head trauma.

Deputies responded to the crash around 10:30 p.m. outside a residence in St. Augustine.

When they arrived, they found an overturned golf cart and a passenger suffering from serious injuries.

According to court records, the 35-year-old victim sustained a skull fracture, multiple broken facial bones, a concussion, and a possible broken neck. He was rushed to a Jacksonville hospital for emergency treatment.

The driver of the golf cart remained at the scene. Deputies reported an “overwhelming odor of alcohol” coming from him.

They also noted that his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and that he was swaying while standing. The man admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, according to arrest documents.

Field sobriety tests were administered, which the driver reportedly failed. He later blew a 0.212 and 0.216 on a breathalyzer test.

The man was arrested and charged with DUI resulting in serious bodily injury, a felony, as well as a misdemeanor count of DUI.

Before being booked into the St. Johns County Jail, he was taken to Flagler Hospital for medical clearance.

The case is pending.
