A tense encounter between a local deputy and a man suspected of attempting to break into a vehicle ended with his arrest at a residence on Cabernet Place in St. Augustine last Friday.
Deputies were dispatched around 8:18 p.m. to investigate suspicious circumstances at a home.
When a St. Johns County deputy arrived in a marked patrol vehicle, he spotted the 48-year-old suspect walking aggressively toward his car.
The suspect’s posture was tense, fists clenched, and his pace quickened as he approached the driver’s side door of the deputy’s vehicle, according to a police report.
Despite orders to back up, the suspect grabbed the patrol vehicle’s door handle and repeatedly pulled on it while yelling profanities and demanding the deputy exit the vehicle for a one-on-one showdown.
The deputy closed the door and maneuvered the patrol car to a safe distance — but the man followed, eventually entering the nearby apartment complex.
Backup deputies soon arrived and found the man on the back patio of a residence.
He was detained without further incident or fisticuffs.
He refused to cooperate or explain his actions during the investigation, police said.
Following a medical clearance at Baptist Health, he was transported to St. Johns County Jail.
