“There’s not a bad view in the house,” Southern Living wrote in naming Cap’s On the Water one of the South’s best classic restaurants for 2026.
The recognition highlights the restaurant’s famously sprawling outdoor deck and its decades-long reputation for fresh seafood and attentive service.
The venue’s waterfront location on Vilano Beach has made it a local favorite for generations. Its history stretches back to 1947, when it was a casual eatery known as Prepaul’s Fish Camp.

“Its top-tier location has a long history as an eatery,” the magazine noted, acknowledging the site’s standing role in St. Augustine’s dining scene.
“The restaurant has changed hands a few times, but its commitment to excellent service, delicious food, and unbeatable ambiance hasn’t wavered once,” the outlet raved.
The wine list, which features more than 500 selections, has also become a draw for visitors and locals alike.
Diners often linger on the deck, watching boats drift along the Intracoastal Waterway as the sun subsides.
Despite its popularity, Cap’s has retained a casual, Old Florida charm, according to online reviews.
Staff are known for friendly, knowledgeable service, and the atmosphere is described as relaxed but polished.
The Red Bar in Santa Rosa Beach and The Fish House Restaurant in Key Largo also made Southern Living’s list.
Longstanding spots in Alabama, Kentucky, and North and South Carolina were also recognized.
