A new kind of park could soon be coming to St. Johns County — one where dogs can run free, kids can play, and their humans can sip a cold beer with a river view.

The Planning and Zoning Agency last week unanimously recommended approval of the San Sebastian Dog Park, a 1.25-acre outdoor hangout that combines a fenced dog park, a café serving beer and wine, and even a play area for kids.

The property is owned by Dr. Najla Bell and Ryan Meyer, a husband-and-wife owners of Murabella and Shores Animal Hospitals.

“We’re excited about this idea,” Meyer said during the public hearing. “We think this would be a great addition to the county — a great family-centered place to bring the dog and let them play, bring the kids, let them play — each to their own. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy the day.”

The site, located just west of US 1, would overlook the San Sebastian River and sit just across from several County government buildings.

Nearby, the growing Flagler Crossing apartment complex brings more than 300 households into walking distance, according to the applicants.

The concept, presented to the panel by Corner Lot Development’s Andre Green, would include a 1,300-square-foot café, along with an outdoor deck, dog play zones, and space for a kids’ playground.

A membership system would be in place for canine access, and all pups would need to be vaccinated and well-behaved.

Staff, referred to as Bark Rangers, would be on-site to monitor activity and ensure dog decorum.

Initially, the park would open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with expanded hours Tuesday through Sunday after six months.

Alcohol would be served in designated areas and subject to county ordinances and inspections.

Next stop: the Board of County Commissioners for final approval.
