The firearm was discovered Tuesday morning.

An 11-year-old St. child was discovered in possession of a handgun on a school bus Tuesday morning, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

The Mill Creek Academy student was removed from the bus after it arrived at the World Golf Village campus and the gun was secured, SJSO said.

There was not danger to students or staff, and the agency is continuing its investigation.

It was not clear where the student obtained it, but SJSO confirmed that it was loaded.

No threats were leveled by the student, the department said.

SJSO is working with the St. Johns County School District and mental health personnel as they probe the matter.

Mill Creek Academy, a K-8 school, hosts roughly 2,000 students.
