They built it, and they’re coming.
St. Johns County’s newest recreational attraction — Mill Creek Park — is now open.
To the delight of parents and their kids, the $12 million expanse of fields is the county’s first new park to open in more than a decade.
The project included a multi-purpose filed, two baseball diamonds and two softball fields.
Located on State Road 16, the facility will host a variety of sports, including baseball, softball, lacrosse, flag football and soccer.
The complex will also feature four batting cages, restroom and a concessions area.
St. Johns County Commissioner Christian Whitehurst celebrated the grand opening at Tuesday’s board meeting.
“It was very exciting,” he said of a ribbon cutting this past Saturday. “The kids were all smiling. Parking is a little tight, but that’s to be expected. That means the fields are being used. I was really happy to see the fields packed to the gills.”
