A 3-year-old child drowned in a Nocatee retention pond Friday evening, according to St. Johns County Rescue officials.

Emergency crews rushed to Crystal Sands Court at 7:15 p.m. after 911 callers reported that the toddler had been pulled from the water, agency spokesman Chris Naff told The Citizen.

Arriving units found the child in cardiac arrest.

The toddler was rushed to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.

It remains unclear how the 3-year-old accessed the pond.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.
