A 17-year-old driver will not face charges following a crash Tuesday afternoon that claimed the life of a 12-year-old student near Patriot Oaks Academy, according to the St. Johns County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene just after 3 p.m., around the time students were being dismissed from the K-8 campus. The crash happened on Longleaf Pine Parkway in front of the school.

According to investigators, the child was riding a 99cc gas-powered mini dirt bike in a crosswalk when the collision occurred. Authorities said the student was wearing a helmet.

In a statement, the Sheriffโ€™s Office said, โ€œThe 17-year-old driver involved is cooperating with law enforcement. Based on current evidence, no charges have been filed.โ€

The student was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Patriot Oaks Academy Principal Drew Chiodo said in a statement, โ€œOur deepest sympathy and heartfelt concern are with the studentโ€™s family, close friends, neighbors, classmates, and teachers during this incredibly difficult time.โ€

The school said it will provide counselors for as long as needed as students cope with the loss of their classmate.

“While we may not have all the answers, we are committed to maintaining a sense of routine while also providing safe, supportive spaces for those who need time to process their feelings,” he continued.

The Sheriffโ€™s Office Traffic Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
