The two people killed in a horrific car accident in St. Augustine Friday night were a visiting couple from Ocala, The Citizen has learned.

The man and woman, a source told The Citizen, were in their sixties.

Their names have not yet been released pending full notification of relatives.

The crash took place near The Ponce St. Augustine Hotel, 1111 N. Ponce De Leon Blvd around 8:30 p.m., according to first responders.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue Department declared the victims dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed in relation to the accident, and the driver has not been identified.

News crews arriving at the scene saw both victims lying in the roadway before the area was cleared.

A third victim was transported to a local hospital. An update on their condition was not available.

The Citizen will update this story as more details emerge.

  1. why are there no updates on this story and so few details? The former coworkers (me included) of one of the people that were killed are devastated here in Virginia.

  2. That is a very dangerous stretch of road, with hotels on the east and west sides – restaurants on both sides – I see people taking their lives in their hands to cross there. I drive that part of US 1 every day. There is a 45 mile per hour speed limit. There are no pedestrian signs such as the ones on A1A and Coastal Highway with flashing lights and red flags for the pedestrians to wave. The businesses and the city need to get together and make it a pedestrian-friendly stretch. God bless the victims and their families.
