A Jacksonville Beach man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police say he drove his father’s Volvo hatchback into the ocean, according to reports.
Beachgoers called police after spotting the sinking hulk slowly slipping into the surf.
Responding cops ran a tag check on the vehicle after making sure no one was inside.
They eventually went to the home of the car’s listed owner, a Jacksonville Beach man who said he had let his 21-year-old son borrow the vehicle earlier in the day.
The perplexed parent called his son, and officers were dispatched to his location.
The man admitted to police that he purposefully sought to submerge the car and wished he could have pointed his “middle finger” at his father while doing so.
He “initially attempted to use a cinder block to send the car into the oceam but the block kept getting stuck on the brake,” according to Action Jax.
Undeterred, he removed the block, hopped in the car, checked to make sure no one was watching, and accelerated into the surf.
“While driving, he grinned and wished he could point his middle finger at his father and aunt,” the report stated.
He said he left the scene and went to his mother’s home.
The man was arrested and booked into Duval County jail on a criminal mischief rap after his dad opted to press charges for what he estimated to be a $6,500 loss.
According to court records, the suspect was hit with a DUI charge in 2021 after he was found standing next to a Volvo after driving it into a ditch.
It’s unclear it it was the same vehicle he drove into the ocean.
