Federal marshals have arrested Robin McAlarney, a Jacksonville Beach man wanted in connection with the death of 22-year-old Navy veteran Tara Shaw last May.

Officials announced Monday that McAlarney was taken into custody without incident in South Philadelphia after weeks of searching by federal and local authorities.

He had been sought by the Jacksonville Beach Police Department since late October, when a warrant was issued nearly six months after the May 17 motorcycle crash that killed Shaw.

Investigators allege McAlarney was driving his motorcycle at roughly 90 miles per hour along 3rd Street in Jacksonville Beach, with Shaw riding on the back, when he attempted to split the lane between two vehicles.

According to the incident report, he tried to avoid a car turning left but instead struck the rear of a black Camaro.

Shaw died at the scene, while the occupants of the Camaro were not injured.

Police further allege that McAlarney was intoxicated at the time of the collision. He faces charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

After the charges were filed, investigators said McAlarney failed to surrender and was classified as a fugitive, prompting the Marshals Service to join the search.

Authorities say McAlarney will be extradited to Florida to face prosecution in connection with Shaw’s death.

According to an obituary, Shaw grew up in Georgia and was honorably discharged from the Navy after three years of service.

“Despite the many adversities she faced in her short life, she always strived forward with determination and grace,” it read. “May her strength carry us through this sorrowful time. She will be greatly missed.”
