Another major charter school could be coming to St. Johns County, according to a recent commercial permit application.

The proposal calls for a 160,000-square-foot K-12 campus on a 19-acre parcel off State Road 16.

The site is listed as 3885 S. Francis Road, near the Clyde E. Lassen Veterans Nursing Home.

Plans for the project include sports fields, parking, and associated infrastructure.

The listed applicant for the project is Academica, a Miami-based for-profit company that provides services to more than 200 charter schools nationwide.

Academica is led by CEO Fernando Zulueta, who is widely recognized as a major figure in Florida’s growing charter school sector.

In a separate project, a 56,000-square-foot K-8 charter school has been proposed for a 10-acre site off Pacetti Road in St. Johns County.

A separate charter school has been proposed for an 18-acre parcel in St. Augustine.

Plans for that site include academic buildings, parking areas, a multi-purpose recreation field, and an early learning center.

That project is being developed by Charter Schools USA, a Fort Lauderdale-based operator that manages more than 110 schools across the Southeast.

Both charter school projects are still under review by county staff and are in the approval process.
