An attorney for Angelo Theodosiou says the 64-year-old Nocatee man is innocent of the allegations lodged against him after a tragic golf cart accident that killed his wife over the weekend.

L. Lee Lockett, a veteran Jacksonville-based lawyer representing Theodosiou, said his client did not cause the crash and was not under the influence.

โ€œMy client maintains his innocence and we’re looking forward to receiving the evidence,” Lockett told The Citizen. “He didn’t cause the accident, he was not impaired.”

Lockett said Theodosiou is shattered by the death of his wife, 58-year-old Christina Theodosiou.

“He’s heartbroken,” the lawyer said. “He’s distraught. He’s depressed as can be.”

The couple, originally from New York, moved to Nocatee to retire in recent years. Prior to their move, Angelo ran a successful restaurant in Jackson Heights, Queens.

The couple’s grief-stricken family, the attorney said, are standing staunchly by the father as they navigate the crash’s aftermath.

“I’ve spoken to his son,” Lockett said. “And what I’ve been told is the entire family is heartbroken, and they are standing behind him.”

Christina Theodosiou was riding as a passenger in the golf cart her husband was driving Sunday night.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the accident happened around 10:45 p.m. on Recollection Drive, where Christina fell from the vehicle and struck her head on the concrete, suffering severe trauma.

She was airlifted to Memorial Hospital Jacksonville and pronounced dead the following day.

SJSO alleges that Angelo Theodosiou is โ€œat faultโ€ in the wreck and suspect he had been drinking.

He was subsequently charged with misdemeanor DUI and refusal to submit to a breath test.

A family friend described the tragedy as โ€œan awful situation,โ€ telling The Citizen, โ€œThey are both wonderful, wonderful people. They retired here and were really happy. Itโ€™s just terrible, itโ€™s unbelievable.โ€

Residents in the surrounding area said the crash underscores safety concerns.

They pointed to a recently opened greenway path that has increased golf cart and e-bike traffic, creating congestion and, according to some, several recent near misses.
