Officials have called off a search for a possible missing jet ski operator in St. Augustine after a thorough vetting of the area came up empty.

Investigators are unsure if the person who reportedly hit a buoy left the area on their own or if there was no serious accident to begin with, according to sources.

There is no indication of a hoax in relation to the incident.

Officials said a witness alerted 911 that a jet ski smashed into an object near the bridge around 9 p.m.

The Bridge of Lions was shut down to traffic until 10:35 p.m. as units mobilized for the search.

The St. Augustine Police Department, St. Augustine Fire Rescue and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission all participated in he effort.

The Coast Guard suspended their search after midnight.

The FWC said there was no evidence of a crash or signs of wreckage.
