A man was arrested in downtown St. Augustine Sunday night after police say he threatened an officer with a knife in a busy downtown St. Augustine area, prompting an armed confrontation.
According to the St. Augustine Police Department, officers were responding to a disturbance involving an intoxicated male near the intersection of St. George Street and Cuna Street around 9:30 p.m., an area heavily trafficked by pedestrians.
Witnesses reported that the man had been behaving aggressively and brandishing a knife during an argument with another male.
Police say an officer later encountered a man matching the description of the knife-holder near Hypolita Street and Toques Place.
The man, identified in papers as homeless, allegedly approached the officer aggressively while attempting to open a folding knife.
The officer drew his service weapon, pointed it at the suspect and ordered him to drop the knife, which he did before being taken into custody without further incident.
Authorities said the 31-year-old male showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, a wobbly gait, and the odor of alcohol.
A search following the arrest recovered additional knives, police said.
He was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, a felony, and disorderly intoxication, a misdemeanor.
No injuries were reported.
