Two St. Johns County deputies crashed their patrol vehicles while trying to avoid civilian cars during a high-speed chase on I-95, according to an arrest report.
The pursuit began Friday around 9:18 p.m., when deputies spotted a stolen red Subaru traveling southbound near mile marker 321.
The driver, a 24-year-old Jacksonville man, refused to stop when officers activated lights and sirens.
The vehicle accelerated past 100 mph, weaving across lanes and cutting off other drivers, papers state.
Motorists were forced to “slam on their brakes, which caused two deputies to crash their agency issued patrol vehicles, while attempting to evade a crash with civilians,.”
Deputies eventually deployed stop sticks and performed a PIT maneuver to end the chase.
The Subaru was confirmed as reported stolen out of Duval County.
The defendant appeared sluggish, with bloodshot eyes, and refused field sobriety and urine tests, deputies reported.
He was booked into the St. Johns County Jail and faces multiple charges, including aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, grand theft of a motor vehicle, DUI, reckless driving, and refusal to submit to DUI testing.
Court proceedings are scheduled at St. Johns County Court, where the defendant will answer to the charges.
There were no reported injuries.
