Former St. Augustine Assistant Chief Anthony Cuthbert was taken into custody Tuesday in Bunnell by Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies to face charges in St. Johns County, according to a booking report.
The report lists the grounds as an “out-of-county warrant,” but does not provide further details. He was released on bond.
Cuthbert retired in November 2025 after more than 25 years with the St. Augustine Police Department.

He also served as treasurer of the St. Augustine Police Benevolent Organization (PBO) from 2003 until his retirement.
The PBO is a private nonprofit funded by department members that provides financial assistance to officers and their families in times of need. It operates independently of both the city and the police department and does not receive taxpayer funding.
Concerns over the PBO’s finances emerged shortly after Cuthbert stepped down. A review of the organization’s records revealed inconsistencies, prompting a broader investigation by the Office of the State Attorney.
The probe is reportedly examining financial transactions from the past five years.
City officials and SAPD leadership have stated that they are fully cooperating with the investigation. Officials have declined to release additional details, citing the ongoing nature of the case.
Cuthbert’s past roles also included positions on several local boards and charitable organizations, including St. Francis House, Home Again St. Johns, and the St. Augustine Police Officers Pension Board. He did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Citizen will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
