Former Nease High School quarterback Marcus Strokes was named Gulf South Conference offensive player of the week after accounting for 5 touchdowns and leading West Florida University to a 40-28 win over Delta State on Saturday.
The St. Augustine native and redshirt freshman went 17-of-21 for 326 yards with three throwing touchdowns, along with 52 rushing yards and a pair of end zone trips on the ground.
UWF (3-2, 2-1 GSC) will travel to North Carolina to play Chowan tomorrow as Stokes tries to build on last week’s momentum.
A 4-star recruit out of Nease, Stokes had been offered a scholarship to play at the University of Florida in 2022 before a clip emerged of him rapping along to a song that included a racial slur.
The Gators rescinded their offer after an online backlash that drew national headlines.
Stokes took responsibility at the time and vowed to right his career after joining the Division II Argonauts.
Meanwhile, Nease is sitting at 5-0 on the season, including a thrilling overtime win over perennial power St. Augustine.
