The Flagler Estates teen who was severely injured by a hit and run driver last Friday is now awake and speaking, according to his church.
Maslin Mooney, 14, suffered a brain bleed and several broken bones after being hit by a vehicle as he waited to catch a 6:08 a.m. school bus.
“It has truly been a miracle to witness God’s presence in this challenging time,” reads a Facebook post from the First Baptist Church of Hastings. “We are thrilled to share that Maslin is awake and talking!”
Maslin was left on the side of the road for more than 30 minutes until a passer by saw him and called 911.
“He is experiencing some confusion due to his head injury,” the church said. “His MRI results indicate micro-tears in his left inner lobe. Thankfully, the bleeding is stable and not worsening, although he does remain at risk for seizures.”
Despite the gravity of his injuries, the church reported that his doctors are increasingly bullish about his prospects.
“The medical team is optimistic about his recovery and wants him to begin practicing standing and applying weight soon, so your continued prayers for his progress are appreciated,” the post read.
Maslin was also able to consume protein shakes for the first time, another meaningful step on his long road back.
“We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support and prayers,” the church wrote. “The tremendous outpouring of love during this difficult time has truly showcased the strength of our community, extending beyond what we could have ever imagined. For this, we are eternally grateful!!!”
Meanwhile, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said it has identified a potential suspect in the case and that the car involved in the incident has been recovered.
The department declined further comment Tuesday, citing an ongoing investigation.
