A Nocatee woman originally from New York died over the weekend in a golf cart accident in the master planned community, The Citizen has learned.

Christina Theodosiou, 58, was a passenger in the vehicle being driven by her husband, Angelo, at roughly 10:45 p.m. on Sunday on Recollection Drive, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

At some point, Theodosiou, from Queens, New York, fell out of the cart and struck her head on the concrete, suffering severe trauma.

Theodosiou was airlifted from the scene to Memorial Hospital Jacksonville and was pronounced deceased the following day, according to law enforcement.

Her husband, 64, was found to be “at fault” for the accident by responding deputies who suspected that he had been drinking.

Theodosiou was subsequently charged with DUI and refusal to take a breath test — both misdemeanors.

“It’s an awful situation,” a family friend told The Citizen. “They are both wonderful, wonderful people. They retired here and were really happy. It’s just terrible, it’s unbelievable.”

Others expressed concerns about the area where the accident took place, and called for the installation of a speed bump or another mechanism to ease congestion.

Residents told The Citizen that a newly opened greenway path has produced a marked increase in e-bike and golf cart traffic — and a number of near misses in recent months.

Golf cart crashes have become increasingly common in St. Johns County, with some of them resulting in serious injury.

A 44-year-old St Augustine man was charged with felony DUI in June after a passenger in the cart he was driving suffered a skull fracture and broken bones after a severe wreck.
