An e-bike battery sparked a fire inside a St. Augustine apartment over the weekend, according to a report.
The St. Augustine Fire Department responded to the second-floor blaze at 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the agency’s Facebook page.
Arriving crews spotted smoke coming from the building and put out the fire in roughly ten minutes.
There were no reported injuries, but one person has been displaced by the fire.
A subsequent incident report revealed that the fire stemmed from an e-bike battery explosion, according to Action News Jax.
An investigation into the incident is continuing.
E-bike battery explosions — usually involving lithium-ion batteries — have become a growing issue.
The incidents normally stem from overcharging, faulty or counterfeit batteries, or damaged parts.
St. Johns County Commissioner Ann Taylor recently voiced concerns about the use of e-bikes and has proposed new ordinances managing their use.
