The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has applied to build a 16,400 foot chapel in Ponte Vedra, The Citizen has learned.
According to documents filed with the county, the organization wants to develop a “chapel/meetinghouse” on a 6.5-acre property at 2755 Palm Valley Road between the Davis Park turnoff and the Palm Valley Bridge.
The project would also include 227 adjoining parking spaces, according to drawings submitted as part of a pre-application.
The parcel is currently vacant, according to the filing.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is listed as the applicant, with a home address in Utah.
Dorothy Shupe of Arizona-based Sketch Architecture is listed as the church’s official representative on the application.
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, the LDS Church has congregations and temples across the globe.
According to LDS officials, the church has 17 million members worldwide and nearly 7 million in the U.S. alone.
There is currently an LDS church in St. Augustine, and the Ponte Vedra location would be the second in St. Johns County if approved.
