Driver dead after becoming trapped in vehicle following St. Johns County accident

A driver was killed Thursday after becoming trapped in a box truck that veered off Interstate 95 southbound in St. Johns County and crashed into a wooded area near mile marker 314, just south of the State Road 16 exit.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the truck left the roadway, prompting an emergency response.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue crews arrived to find the vehicle heavily damaged and the driver trapped inside.

Despite firefighters’ efforts to extricate him, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team responded to contain a diesel fuel spill caused by the crash.

Traffic in the area crawled as emergency vehicles blocked the right southbound lane and motorists slowed past the wreckage.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.

The vicitm has not been identified.
