It was sink or swim.

Dramatic footage shows St. Johns County Sheriffs deputies rescuing two teens who crashed into a St. Augustine pond last week.

Two 18-year-old females called St. Johns County Fire Rescue at 5 am on November 30 after plunging into the pond off of Holmes Boulevard.

“Please hurry up!” one of the teens can be heard pleading on a 911 call as dispatchers tried to keep them calm while deputies rushed to the scene. “We’re taking on water.”

With the car half submerged and slowly slipping below the surface, arriving officers yelled at the teens to climb out of the window and swim to land.

“Deputy Jayde Glines entered the water and assisted with rescuing the occupants before the vehicle sank approximately 20 feet under the water,” SJSO said.

The pair ultimately made it safely out of the pond before the car disappeared.

An SJSO dive team worked with a local wrecker service to recover the vehicle.

The department said exhaustion may have contributed to the incident.
