For generations, the Ledford name has been synonymous with fishing and family in St. Augustine.

Now, the community that Captain Danny Ledford has served for decades is mobilizing as he finds himself in deep and uncertain waters.

The third-generation boat captain and lifelong resident of Vilano Beach has been diagnosed with brain cancer. According to a recent update shared by his wife Jenny, two large tumors have been found in the front of Danny’s brain, causing significant swelling.

The father of four is currently being treated at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where doctors are planning a craniotomy on Friday to remove the first tumor.

A second craniotomy may follow on Saturday, depending on the results of a biopsy.

“We are still processing what is happening and this feels surreal,” Jenny shared. “We are all devastated, scared, and in disbelief. PLEASE keep Danny in your thoughts and prayers.”

A GoFundMe has been launched to assist the Ledford family as they face mounting medical costs in addition to living expenses.

The campaign, launched by a family friends, amplifies the Ledfords multi-generational commitment to St. Johns County over the years — and how much support they now require in return.

The response has been immense, with $47,000 raised in less than a day.

“WOW — you all are amazing!! Thank you SO much for the generous donations,” wrote organizer Jennie Case in a recent update.

Ledford’s reputation in the St. Augustine area is deeply rooted in a family tradition of fishing and service on local waters.

Born in St. Augustine in 1972 and raised in Vilano Beach, Ledford began fishing at a tot and took his first paid fishing job at just 13, working for his father aboard a 48-foot sport fisher, according to his charter company website.

As a U.S. Coast Guard–licensed professional captain since 2001, Ledford has guided visitors and locals alike through both inshore and offshore fishing trips.

He has operated vessels from a 12-foot john boat to a 68-foot sport fisher. His company, Long Line Charters, reflects the long line of captains in his family — a tradition that began with his grandfather.
