Drivers traveling along A1A South near the St. Augustine Amphitheatre should prepare for temporary traffic shifts beginning Jan. 12, as St. Johns County crews start a utility construction project in the area.
The task will require a lane closure on A1A South in front of the venue and is expected to last three to four weeks.
The work involves relocating an existing 12-inch water main, a necessary step to enable the installation of a new pedestrian crossing signal mast arm near the venue.

County officials say the $500,000 project is aimed at improving pedestrian safety and traffic flow, particularly during large events at the Amphitheatre.
In addition to the utility relocation, crews will complete roadway milling and resurfacing, along with sidewalk and curb repairs.
“This utility relocation is a key step in supporting pedestrian safety improvements in a high-traffic area,” said Samuel Schlesinger, Senior Utility Engineer for the St. Johns County Utility Department. “By coordinating this work in advance, we are helping ensure the long-term reliability of our infrastructure while improving safety and mobility for the community.”
Cyclists will be rerouted through a neighborhood west of A1A, directly across from the Amphitheatre.
Pedestrians will retain access to the stretch, but walkways may be temporarily shifted around the work zone.
Temporary traffic control devices and signs will be installed to maintain traffic flow.
