The local community is uniting to support a popular St. Johns County teacher after a devastating car crash left him with life-threatening injuries.

Jacob Munger, a physical education teacher and volleyball coach at Pine Island Academy in Nocatee, was seriously injured in a wreck last Wednesday night.

Emergency crews spent nearly 30 minutes extricating him from his vehicle before he was airlifted to HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital’s trauma unit.

Since the accident, Munger – who has a wife and young son – has undergone multiple surgeries to treat severe injuries, including broken bones and damage to his leg.

He remains under intensive medical care, and those close to him say his recovery is expected to be lengthy and challenging.

Munger has been a familiar and well-respected figure in the Nocatee community for the past five years.

Friends and family said he is known for his vigor in the classroom and his commitment to students on and off the court.

“Jacob has made a lasting impact on so many young people and families in the community,” a GoFundMe set up to aid his family states.

In the days following the crash, staff at Pine Island Academy began organizing support efforts for Munger and his young family.

A broader GoFundMe fundraising campaign is now underway to help with mounting medical expenses, including emergency transport, surgeries, and ongoing hospital care.

Friends and supporters say the financial burden is expected to be significant, particularly as Munger continues treatment and rehabilitation in the weeks and months ahead.

Munger’s wife and their young son have expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.
