A teen suffered a severe head injury after falling off an electric scooter in St. Augustine Tuesday, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene near Casa Sevilla Ave. at 4:40 p.m. and administered aid before transporting the victim to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

The department said the teen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Details of what caused the accident were not immediately available.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of electric powered modes of transport that have become increasingly popular with young riders.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue officials have noted a sharp uptick in crashes and serious injuries in recent months.

A Nocatee boy was airlifted to a local hospital Monday evening after failing to yield to an Amazon delivery truck and colliding with the vehicle.

Police said that child — who remains hospitalized — was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Citizen will update this story as specifics emerge.
