The body of a 15-year-old swimmer was discovered Monday morning in Ponte Vedra Beach, St. Johns County Police said in a morning Facebook post.
Investigators have confirmed that it’s the same teen who went missing in Jacksonville Beach after getting caught in a rip current at 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
“The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and Jacksonville Beach Police Department are on scene at the discovery of a body near Ponte Vedra Blvd on the beach,” police said.
A beachgoer alerted a lifeguard that a swimmer was struggling to stay afloat about two blocks north of a lifeguard tower. A search effort began immediately without success.
The teen was described as a black male, roughly 5-feet-8-inches tall and wearing red and black swim trunks. He has not been identified.
A large-scale search transitioned to a recovery operation Saturday night after officials determined that he could not have survived in the water for that period.
