Long before Mr. Beast, vapes and Snapchat, the nation’s tweens had to content themselves with three TV networks and a box of Rice Chex.
Sitcoms ruled adolescent entertainment, with shows like Silver Spoons, Diff’rent Strokes and Family Ties entrancing American youth several nights a week.
ABC’s “Growing Pains” — which ran from 1984 to 1992 and starred Kirk Cameron — was a tops rating getter and cemented a permanent place in the pantheon of eighties pop culture.
But Cameron — who will speak at the Crosswater Christian Church in Nocatee in February — ended up taking a different path at the height of his stardom, becoming an evangelical Christian at 18.
Aware of the chaotic fates that befell many of his small screen contemporaries, he extracted himself from mainstream roles, citing their incompatibility with his newfound faith.
Now 54 and with a wife and six children, Cameron remains an active public speaker — and will appear in Ponte Vedra as part of his “Strong Families, Strong Communities” tour.
The February 6 event will also feature music from Matt Hammitt, and tickets can be purchased here.
